IcelandAir – “Best airline I have ever flown”

To put it very simply, we had a great trip. In part to great experiences we had with Icelandair both to and from Keflavik airport [KEF]. While we hit a few very minor hiccups, we truly felt safe, comfortable and taken care. See below “The great” vs “The Ehh..”. I use “Ehh” because I really would hate to call it bad, because it wasn’t, however, there are a few things to consider/ know about ahead of time to reduce stress for any of you more nervous traveler out there.

The great:

  • Comfy Spacious seats
  • Friendly staff – From the attendants that take your baggage at check in to the flight attendants on the plane they were all truly very friendly.
  • Current inflight movies both of the English and Icelandic variety

The [Ehh..]:

  • Flights are notoriously late to board, usually only about 10-15 minutes. We waited about an hour, however it was in the middle of a NY blizzard and the plane needed to be de-Iced. I was certainly OK with losing an hour for the sake of safety.
  • Waits in the Keflavik airport for baggage drop off and check-in can be very long. Make sure to arrive early to beat the rush
  •         We arrived at 2:45PM for a 5:05 take off and we waited about an hour just in line

To us looking back at the flight, the single most impressive part of the experience was when checking in at JFK, the attendant took our passports, to check us in and said “Oh, I see you have the very last two seats on the plain, do you mind if I try to find you a better spot?” ummm… no? She found two seats together at an emergency exit so there was tons of leg room. I felt as though she cared enough to look to make us more comfortable for a five hour flight. I have never seen anyone do that without having to be harassed before on other airlines.
