Boat[ing] it to Iceland

There are a few different lines that I came across in my research of the great country of Iceland. One, from Denmark, is actually a ferry.  You pay for your car, your passengers, and a cabin and has you delivered within two days. The advantage with an option like a ferry to Iceland is that you have the ability to bring your own car! One note to consider is that car rentals are extremely cheap in Iceland. We paid around $30 USD per day for our rental. But, if you want to bring an RV, camper, etc and you’re coming from Europe, this may be a great option for you!

Unfortunately there are no ferries to Iceland from North America for us American travelers… but…there are CRUISES! Most of the cruises from North America leave from North East US, or Canada, and are a minimum of 7 days.  Of course, the longer the cruises to Iceland are the more expensive they can get.

With most of the cruises we found when we looked the journey was a stop in Iceland for 1 day on the way to other ports throughout the Northern Atlantic.  We decided that this was just simply not long enough for use to see all that we wanted to see in Iceland.

Advantages

  • The advantages of boating to Iceland are simple.
  • For those who don’t like planes you don’t have to fly
  • you are afforded the option to bring your own vehicle
  • you have the opportunity to bring your pet to Iceland
  • you can see the world, and more specifically the Northern Atlantic
  • you might even get to see the NORTHERN LIGHTS from a your boat or cruise
  • depending of departure port it may be cheaper than flying

Disadvantages

  • Takes much longer
  • You may get sea-sick
  • depending on whether you choose the ferry or cruise option you may not be allowed to carry-on additional souvenirs due to weight restrictions
  • Boat travel in that region of the world can be subject to poor weather conditions
